Keeping Whole Food Plant Based Vegan while traveling Internationally and Domestically

Hi my family and friends,

I have had many opportunities to travel both internationally and domestically for pleasure in my retirement years.  To say the least, it is and continues to be, one of my favorite passions in my life.  I have seen so many countries and interesting places and my greatest pleasure is doing so while staying the course of my conscious lifestyle.

While many countries understand Vegetarian more easily than Whole Food Plant Based and/or Vegan, it is somewhat easy, unless there is a language barrier, to explain that no dairy is the biggest difference in the two.  I did notice that true vegan places are sometimes not very available on the main tourist streets, but often off the beaten paths, which make it even more exciting to travel to otherwise missed areas.

Global flavors, same commitment—WFPB eating made simple anywhere in the world.

That being said, many countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, China, etc., are basically vegetarian and vegan based, and made my lifestyle easier to attain, while other places such as Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Scotland, Ireland, Finland, etc., are a bit more challenging, but doable.  You can control your dish as it arrives at your table, but sometimes the chefs are not thinking about your dietary wants and needs and cook according to what they know or what they have been trained to do.  And, that is all ok... you have to be flexible in all aspects of your travels. A flexible attitude will help you continue to stay the course and enjoy your travels.  (Unless you are truly allergic or get sick from a certain food, we have all eaten something along the way that was not a part of our lifestyle.

Our huge, diverse, amazing world has so many wonderful places, people, food, experiences, and highlights to enjoy so while exploring them we hold high our lifestyle and stay focused, but flexible as needed.

Planning before you go....

It pays to research ahead of time the country/countries you plan to visit.  The more you plan, the easier it will be to enjoy your trip.  Plan ahead for your travel such as car, train, plane, etc.  My experience is that vegan airplane food leaves a lot to be desired.  I order the vegan meals ahead of time, while booking my flights, but still can't bring myself to totally enjoy the meal.  I bring a bento box filled with food for long trips, as well as snacks to keep me from looking for anything else.  My bento box is filled with beans, tofu, nuts, seeds, dates, trail mix, fruit and something covered in dark chocolate to satisfy my sweet tooth.  It's easy to fill, easy to carry and snaps shut so you are safe from leakage.  Also, a small cooler works wonders for things that need to stay cold.  These 2 items have saved me multiple times when I couldn't find healthy vegan options in the airport or on the plane.  Being prepared as much as possible helps you enjoy your trip, stay satisfied and is key to maintaining your lifestyle.  Planning is just as important when you travel as it is when you are home!!

The Happy Cow App...

This app is a lifesaver around any town.  If you have the opportunity to roam around town, this app helps find great options as you explore your new surroundings.  The app gives you plenty of choices and places where the locals go.  It helps to review this app before you get to your destination, so you can pinpoint some places that may be close to where you will be staying.  The app also has recent reviews to help you navigate if you should visit. Always remember you can find a local supermarket and grab some healthy options there!

In Conclusion...

Traveling, both internationally and domestically is incredibly exciting and such a great way to see our beautiful world.  Don't let your lifestyle make it difficult, make it a planned opportunity for your greatest adventures.  Be prepared and do plenty of planning before you go.  Be as flexible as you need to be, ask for what you want, be understanding of any language barrier, or respectful of any custom or cultural differences.  Always do the best you can to stay aligned with your values, honor yourself, and enjoy your new journeys throughout this world.
