Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

 Lee and Joyce have worked in Healthcare their entire careers. They can attest to the fact that our current system is about crisis intervention and disease management. It does not sufficiently address the root causes of chronic disease that plaques the U.S. - born mostly from a form of malnutrition called the Standard American Diet (SAD). If you desire optimal health and well-being, we encourage you to join them as they equip you to transform yourself and aspire to age well.

I have been whole food plant based for over 5 years now and I have never felt better. My growing knowledge of plant based nutrition made me poignantly aware of how we focus on the wrong things in healthcare. The “technologization” of healthcare has led to a system that emphasizes drugs, surgeries, and tests while ignoring the most important cornerstones of health which are what you eat, your physical activity, your sleep and the quality of your relationships. 

 

The system implicitly delivers the message that responsibility for your health is to be handed over to doctors and hospitals rather than educating you to be the CEO of your own health.  Most of the healthiest populations in history had no access to hospitals, CAT scanners or drugs and lived long and healthy lives.

Given my experience working as both a primary care doctor and a specialist, with my interests in fitness, nutrition, anti-aging and health policy I have a perspective that few physicians have. Despite being 63 years old, I have managed to stay in respectable physical condition while having a very busy professional career.  I plan to share my tips and tricks that allow me to remain vigorous and energetic without unduly stressing joints that can lead to injury and disability.

Together Joyce and I endeavor to educate and inspire people with a fresh perspective on a  range of health related matters including  anti-aging and lifestyle medicine, plant based nutrition, fitness and how the health care system in its current form, can work for or against your best interests. We aim to promote ideas that will allow us and our audience to age in a manner that we would all aspire to in which we stay vigorous, healthy and fully engaged in life as long as possible. This is what we mean by aspirational aging.  Aspirational aging is not just about longevity but about quality of life.

I can state emphatically that most individuals are being duped. Duped by over-testing and overprescribing, with an emphasis on all the wrong things. Take cancer as one example. I have an interest in Oncology that dates back to the 90s. I've had the opportunity to sell some of the newest novel agents and diagnostic methodologies in the fight against cancer (radio-labeled isotopes, taxanes, 5HT3's, Gliadel wafers for brain cancer, Next Gen Sequencing, Mass Spectrometry...). And I have been privileged to call on some of the top institutions, such as the Mayo Clinic and  MD Anderson, to name a few. It's truly disheartening to think of the families that are losing their life's savings chasing treatment regimens that may, at best, extend overall survival by a mere 2.5 months. That is a line straight out of an article on price controls that I co-authored and was featured in the ASCO Post.

Cancer has impacted my friends and family, taking loved ones in its wake. My mother passed away in February from endometrial cancer. I have recently discovered that a particular genetic mutation runs in our family and certainly underscored her cancer's aggressive nature. The best thing I can do preemptively is to change my entire approach to food. Which I did, and at the age of 56, I have never felt better.

Nutrition is the key to the prevention and even reversal of many of the chronic diseases that ail the U.S. This should be gratifying to the masses because it means you have agency. You have some skin in the game and can accomplish so much with a fork in hand. Woohoo! I hope you'll reach out to us for wellness coaching, advice, and more. We welcome any suggestions you may have on topics related to WFPB living. ​But it doesn't stop with the diet of course. Proper exercise, sleep, community engagement, and continuous learning are foundational to longevity and optimal brain health. I am once again singing in the choir (literally and metaphorically), pursuing my pilots license, biking, and so much more. This is what it means to grow old with vitality.
